Product Design: Everything You Need To Know

You have probably heard of the term “product design”. But how much do you know about it? We here at Mindsparkz are very experienced in product design, with countless product design projects for our clients! This blog will cover everything you need to know about product design. With this new knowledge, your company can transcend your marketing efforts to the next level!

What is Product Design?

Firstly, let’s define product design. Product design refers to a wide and broad range of processes that lead to the development of new ideas and ultimately, the creation of new products. This might sound complicated and confusing, so let’s break down the processes of product design!

Here is how it works:

Product creation from scratch

This refers to the creation of new products that don’t exist in the market yet, from scratch! The process of product design will vary, especially depending on if the project is small-scale or large scale.

Concept:

Product design begins with the designers having to find a solution to a problem, in order to turn them into objectives for the new design. In this stage, the product designers research and evaluate ideas and conceptualize them to turn them into tangible inventions and products. The restraints of the concept are also considered. Then, the concepts for the new product are brainstormed and evaluated. Once the team has reached a consensus on a final concept, considering the limitations, parameters, and objectives, the final concept for the new product design is now ready!

Sketching:

Next, the sketches for the new concept are prepared. This allows for the first visuals of the product to surface, without the need for committing excessive resources into a single idea. The basic shapes, as well as more complex mechanisms and concepts, are sketched, allowing the team to visualize the concept for the first time. The limitations of the design can now be seen visually, and corrective measures can be put in place.

3D Modelling:

Once the sketches have been finalized and the appropriate corrective measures have been taken, 3D modeling of the concept can now take place. 3D models are created using specialized software, known as computer-aided design (CAD), with a 3D artist working on the model. Once the model is completed, 3D rendering takes place with or without photorealistic effects. In certain cases, the model will be created physically using 3D printers, although this is not the norm.

Product Innovation/Material Research

Material Selection

Next, research begins on the materials for the new product. Many factors have to be taken into consideration when selecting the material for the product, with the important ones being costs, durability, functionality, and ease of applying the concept. Once these factors have been considered and a final material has been selected by the team, the concept will be sent to factories to receive quotes and samples of the product. After the samples are approved by the team, mass production of the new product can finally begin!

Small-scale Projects:

The process of product innovation and material selection differs for smaller-scale and larger-scale projects. For smaller-scale projects that do not require extensive testing and market feedback, the product design process will proceed straight to material research without a prototype, as the final material for the product needs to be decided in advance to request factories for quotations and samples of the product.

Large-scale Projects

For larger-scale projects with more high-stake innovative products, prototypes would be designed. With the 3D model now ready, the design team starts prototyping to build an experimental model of the concept. Depending on the product, a low-fi prototype with different materials might be made to test the shape and design of the product, which will significantly and directly factor in the selection of the most adequate materials.

Advanced Prototypes for Extremely Large-Scale Projects

For certain extremely large-scale projects with high-stakes, a prototype very close to the actual final product with finalized materials to be released into the market would be designed. This allows testing of the product to review the core operations, key user flows and functionality. The prototype may also be tested in the market to receive feedback from the intended target demographic on their opinions and suggestions for the new product. With feedback and analysis of the metrics of the product, the prototype is improved and made more market-friendly. This process can involve the creation of multiple prototypes and repeated testing, as the final product to be mass-produced has to be perfect.

How we can help you…

As the blog explains, product design is a complicated multi-step process that requires careful consideration of the scale of the project, trends, limitations, needs, and requests of the client, and capabilities, among many other considerations. With such a careful need for attention to detail, product design requires a specialized team in order to effectively conceptualize a new product. That’s where Mindsparkz comes in! • I am really enjoying the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues? A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any tips to help fix this problem?

  • I have taken notice that in old digital cameras, special receptors help to maintain focus automatically. Those sensors of some cams change in contrast, while others employ a beam with infra-red (IR) light, especially in low lumination. Higher specification cameras occasionally use a mixture of both programs and could have Face Priority AF where the camera can ‘See’ the face and focus only on that. Thank you for sharing your opinions on this weblog.
